Deputy Chief Emanuel J. Katranakis has been an NYPD member for over 33 years, during which he was assigned to the Forensics Investigations Division (FID) for twenty-five years with distinction and rose through the ranks to assume the leading role as the Commanding Officer of FID before his retirement in October 2022.

The Forensics Investigations Division (FID) has a staff of 575 highly specialized forensic investigators, scientists, and support staff assigned to the Police Laboratory, Crime Scene Unit, Latent Print Section, and Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) Liaison Unit, responsible for scientifically analyzing over 60,000 forensic cases and operational response to 1,800 crime scenes annually.

As the Commanding Officer of FID, Chief Katranakis served as a forensic subject-matter expert to the Police Commissioner, Chief of Detectives, and Principal Executive Staff.

During his executive tenure, Chief Katrankis implemented and oversaw dozens of forensic initiatives and programs, including the accreditation of the Police Laboratory, the creation of new NYPD forensic units, creating new forensic specialist positions, introduced state-of-the-art technologies for forensic investigations, composed and established evidence-related Department policies, re-engineered processes from the crime scene to reporting forensic results, while managing an annual operating multi-million dollars budget

Throughout his tenure in the Forensic Investigations Division, Chief Katranakis improved the quality of forensic services never before available to investigators, increased the training of investigators to improve their understanding of forensic science and its capabilities to solve crimes, works closely with prosecutors to ensure the NYPD’s forensic work product facilitates prosecutions, and focused on working collaboratively with the forensic science community to bring cutting edge advances in forensic science to the NYPD to enhance the ability to identify and prosecute violent felons with the preservation and presentation of the credible evidence.
